The word seasoning
means ripening. Salt ripens, makes ready to reap, perfects the purpose of every
spice, condiment and herb added to the food. It does this by helping highlight
the flavor that each of these ingredients add to the food. So, it is salt that makes
the food tasty and without salt, it is not possible to even differentiate
between the various flavors present in the food and the food can hardly be
called ‘fit to eat’!
Jesus says that as
salt, Christians bring out the God-flavors. We are called and in fact equipped
to highlight various aspects of godliness! If we do not do this, people will
not be able to come across godliness in their lives! That’s our role! Our
presence in a place, in a community, in a company or in a situation should be
able to highlight and accentuate various attributes of God! It is through this
quality of ours that God advertises himself to the world. When we malfunction,
“God’s Campaign” gets affected and people miss out on encountering God!
We cannot be the seasoning
if we lump up in a corner as a set apart, elect, separated community! We have
to be in the world, in every sphere, every realm of human activity and become
transmitters of godliness there. Jesus led the way by doing this with the so
called “worst” groups! Also, if we are not able to cause seasoning, Jesus says
that we are useless. We have defeated the purpose of our calling and placement.
We are only trample-ready and dump-worthy!
Godliness is
potentially everywhere but it’s only when we, his people, reach the place or
situation that it suddenly gets emphasized and perfected! This world sees love,
hope, goodness and other godly attributes just because we are here and they see
it better when we do our roles well. So can we also label our roles as ‘God’s Campaign
Perfecting’?
Prayer:God, thank you for calling us the salt of the earth! We are supposed to highlight your attributes through our life and thus help in drawing sinful men towards you! You have selected fragile men to complete and perfect your attributes at least as far as people who will come into their lives are concerned. What a privilege! May we not lose our saltiness and be dumped. Shower grace. Amen.
